Ozone Therapy: What Is It And How Can It Be Used To Improve Your Health?

What exactly is Ozone Therapy?

Ozone therapy is the use of medical ozone as a biological medicine in different parts of the body, most often with the aim of relieving pain and chronic inflammation caused by different diseases. It is a safe and effective therapy that can reduce cell damage caused by oxidative stress from excess free radicals. It is a relatively new and growing technique. Medical ozone is a mixture of low concentrations of ozone with medical oxygen.

Some experts explain the function of medical ozone by comparing it to a vaccine, as it has a similar effect on the body, stimulating antioxidant defenses causing a small amount of controlled oxidation. This stimulation is risk-free, as modern generators do not generate toxic doses. This small oxidation triggers molecules in the cells that activate repair and defense genes, including antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and reoxygenating genes.

What are the benefits of Ozone Therapy?

Successive applications of medical ozone on a general scale improve the ability of erythrocytes to give up oxygen, and this, broadly speaking, improves the ability of cells to repair themselves. For this reason, ozone therapy is often used as a complementary treatment for many chronic diseases that cannot be cured, such as arthritis or osteoarthritis or some inflammatory pathologies of the digestive system. It is ideal for improving the quality of life in individuals with chronic pain and suffering from infectious, ischemic and autoimmune processes. The medical action of ozone improves tissue conditions, according to the excellent results of a randomised clinical trial published in the European Journal of Pharmacology, where treatment achieved significant recoveries in ulcers of diabetic patients.

The beneficial effect of ozone on another gas, nitric oxide, which is crucial for maintaining optimal levels of capillary vessel dilation and thus blood flow, has also been demonstrated in a paper published in Liver International, improving life prospects in critically ill patients.

And, as demonstrated by a group of researchers from the Department of Physiology at the University of Siena (Italy), the gases that result from the decomposition of ozone behave as stress signaling molecules, improving cellular energy balance and the immune system. This is of significant benefit to patients with psoriasis, asthma, or rheumatoid arthritis. Ozone acts as a true cellular “garbage can”, scavenging free radicals. For example, in an organism that has received ozone therapy, the damage after a heart attack would be significantly less, which would support preventive applications in patients with coronary and cerebral-vascular risk.

In recent years, due to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect, ozone therapy has emerged as an alternative therapy for the treatment of lumbar disc herniation, radicular pain and lower back pain, in the latter case the efficacy is very high.

Ozone therapy in low doses has a modulating effect on the immune system and is used for diseases affecting the immune system. Medium doses work as a stimulator of the antioxidant defense system and are very useful in chronic degenerative diseases. Finally, high doses are used especially in the treatment of ulcers or infected wounds.
The advantages of ozone therapy are varied, including the fact that there are no allergic or anaphylactic reactions after application, which makes it possible to repeat the treatment. In addition, the risk of infection is lower due to the germicidal properties of ozone.

Patients report that post-infiltration discomfort lasts two to three days. In addition, ozone therapy, unlike corticosteroids, does not weaken tendons or ligaments. Another advantage of ozone is that it can infiltrate infected fields and does not interfere with other medical conditions, such as diabetes, obesity, kidney failure or liver failure.
