Top 3 superfoods nobody is talking about

Chantal Di Donato - Holistic Health Coach

You may be the healthiest person you know: eating only fresh organic, locally produced foods, living a healthy lifestyle, staying away from radiations and practicing yoga and meditation. But, you may still have some nutritional deficiencies.

This is where superfoods come into the picture. The definition of superfoods, although it has been widely misused for marketing purposes, is that of plant-based foods that contain complete nutritional properties or, if not, they have health proprieties that make them unique. My own definition of superfoods is this: foods with amazing energy from nature itself, which given a chance to serve our bodies, will allow us to be super humans. I am not saying you will fly and lift buildings, but they have the power to make you feel invincible, only because they will enhance your physical and mental capacity to cope and perform in life.

We are, all, familiar with the usual suspects such as Gojis, Aloe Vera, Spirulina or Maca, but by digging a little deeper, there are many others that are not so popular, yet contain amazing healing properties.

What I love about the foods we are labelling “super” is that they are by no means new discoveries. These plants and herbs have been used by many ancient civilizations for thousands of years, prior to our interest and use of them, which to me means they are truly powerful.

So I would like to introduce you to my top 3 superfoods and superherbs, which will blow your mind!

Medicinal Mushrooms: Chinese doctors and Shamans have used mushrooms to heal people for centuries. Mushrooms have amazing health properties amongst any other herb. They boost the immune system, fight infections and have anti angiogenic properties, which stop the development of fat and cancer cells. Although, mushrooms in general should be definitively considered as part of a healthy diet, two of them wear the crown for their super powers. Chaga and Reishi mushrooms are the King and Queen of all medicinal mushrooms. They both have incredible immunological properties and Chaga has been proven to be a miracle worker for high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Although they are centuries old, they only really became popular a couple of years ago when David Wolfe, superfood expert, begun looking into their healing properties and shared them with the masses. They are now available in most health stores in forms of powder. Not easily purchased in their “integral” status, although some farmers, even in the UK, do farm them and sell them fresh. They are rather expensive in Europe and the US; but very affordable in Asia where they are still commonly used in Chinese medicine.  If you get hold of the fresh mushrooms or powder, the best way to implement them is to make tea (when you have the fresh mushroom) or add them to smoothies directly (if you have powder)

Noni: This tropical fruit from Polynesia is very special! It really doesn’t smell very good; but many love the taste, though still an acquired one. The Kahunas, local Polynesian healers, to heal their patients, used Noni. It is very rich in antioxidants and selenium. It is great for curing cancer as well as beauty; selenium is a powerful element for skin elasticity and health. “Less wrinkles eating fruit? Sing me up!”  But aside from the aesthetic side, this fruit has been proven to be an amazing antimicrobial and antifungal, particularly when fermented. Fermented foods are excellent for gut health, and even better when these foods contain other healing skills. The actual fruit is not the only thing one can consume though; the Noni plant holds more health benefits as a whole. By making tea, using the leaves, one can improve digestion and correct any intestinal issues one may have! It is just the great power of this plant!

Camu Camu Berry: This berry has been named the king of Vitamin C. This South American fruit is extremely powerful. Berries in general are considered superfoods for their high antioxidant content, but Camu Camu takes the cake; it has the highest content of Vitamin C ever discovered. This fruit has the power to really heal people with Cancer or MS when used in high quantities and in conjunction with a healthy plant based diet. Dr. James Duke was one of the first scientists to vouch for the power of vitamin C to cure diseases, and one of the first to vouch for the intake of it via Camu Camu rather than supplements. Camu is also great for the skin, creating a radiant and smooth skin, decreases inflammation in joints, so great for arthritis, supports healthy vision by feeding the eyes with the right antioxidants and improves respiration, so of help for people who may suffer from severe allergies and asthma.

As you can see, just because these superfoods and superherbs are not highly publicized yet, they are no less magical than any other superfood we are continuously hearing about. But their powers come with a caveat: the use of superfoods is only really effective if a healthy diet and lifestyle are in place.  Even the most powerful compound can’t fix the damage caused by ongoing unhealthy lifestyles; the magic bullet just doesn’t exist. But I do hope that you will integrate the power of nature with a healthier way of living to enjoy the benefits of any superfood you chose to add into your diet.
